SAN DIEGO—The San Diego State University Aztecs, ranked 68th in the meost recent ACHA Division-1 rankings, experienced more of the same hardship they’ve faced throughout the season.
The Aztecs hosted the Arizona State University Sun Devils, who were ranked 19th in the most recent ACHA D1 standings. The visitors were quick to flex their top-tier talent.
The Sun Devils dominated the first period of the weekend, and went to the first intermission up 7-1. The following periods were riddled with penalties, including multiple five-minute major penalties, and see the score finish 12-2.
Sophomore Alexander Xinos would tally his first college hockey in the game. “Feels amazing, dreams come true. These guys are family and I couldn’t be happier to do it with this team,” said the youngster.
He was also blunt about what the team needed to change in the following game: “Obviously the score would be a good start,” Xinos mentioned “I think some of us were buzzing tonight… we’ve just got to change that score and flip it around for tomorrow.”
The Aztecs did have new life to start Saturday’s game. The team would find an early goal from senior Blake Reed. But, they would concede four more goals in the first period on route to an 8-2 loss.
With two games remaining, the Aztecs are on the hunt for their first D1 after going 0-17-1 so far this season. They will be facing George Mason University, who the Aztecs earned their only overtime loss against this season.
At 8pm Feb. 17th and 8:30pm Feb. 18th, the Aztecs will have their final and most likely opportunity to sieze their first ACHA D1 win.
